Eugene Police to increase Hwy 99 enforcement targeting speeding, distracted driving, and pedestrian safety violations on June 25

Eugene, OR – Eugene Police Department officers will conduct a coordinated enforcement operation along Highway 99 on June 25, focusing on both vehicle and pedestrian safety in response to a rise in crashes and dangerous roadway behavior.

According to the Eugene Police Department, multiple teams will be deployed throughout the corridor to address traffic safety concerns involving drivers and pedestrians. The operation will span different sections of Hwy 99, with officers assigned to specific enforcement priorities.

From Royal Avenue to Bethel Drive, officers will focus on vehicle-related violations, including speeding, seatbelt use, and distracted driving behaviors. Police said these issues have contributed to ongoing safety concerns along the busy corridor.

From Roosevelt Boulevard to Royal Avenue, additional officers will focus on pedestrian-related violations, including unsafe crossing behavior and failure to use designated crosswalks.

The enforcement effort will be supported by Eugene Police Housing Support Officers, Community Service Officers, and other departmental units working alongside patrol teams.

Police said the operation comes in response to a high number of fatal pedestrian-vehicle crashes in the area, as well as continued reports of dangerous driving behavior such as speeding and distraction behind the wheel. Officials also noted concerns about unsafe pedestrian conduct, including individuals not following crosswalk rules.

The department emphasized that the goal of the enforcement is to improve overall roadway safety for all users, both drivers and pedestrians, along one of Eugene’s busiest traffic corridors.

Officials did not specify the duration of the enforcement period beyond June 25 but indicated that additional safety operations may be considered depending on ongoing traffic conditions and crash trends in the area.
