Eugene, OR – A fast-moving vegetation fire near Jasper Road and Mt. Vernon Road in Springfield, Oregon, grew to approximately 16 acres before firefighters were able to stop its advance toward the nearby Mt. Vernon neighborhood.

Eugene Springfield Fire responded at approximately 1:15 p.m. after receiving a report of the vegetation fire. Officials said strong winds caused the fire to spread rapidly through several acres of ground fuels and pushed it toward nearby residences.

Ten Eugene Springfield Fire apparatus responded to the scene, with assistance from Pleasant Hill Goshen Fire, Lowell Fire, the Oregon Department of Forestry, Coburg Fire, Mohawk Fire and Upper McKenzie Fire.

Firefighters worked to stop the forward progress of the fire before it reached the Mt. Vernon neighborhood.

Law enforcement agencies also responded as several residences were threatened. Springfield Police, Oregon State Police and the Lane County Sheriff’s Office carried out immediate evacuations of residents in areas at risk from the advancing fire.

The fire was later brought under control, although crews remained at the scene throughout the evening to extinguish remaining hot spots and monitor conditions.

According to an update from Eugene Springfield Fire, a drone operated by Springfield police measured the fire at approximately 16 acres.

Officials did not report any injuries or structural damage in the information released about the fire. The cause of the vegetation fire was not immediately provided.

Fire crews continued monitoring the area after the main fire was contained to ensure remaining hot spots did not lead to additional spread.
