Wisconsin – A Wisconsin woman is behind bars and is now charged with first-degree intentionaI homicide and domestic abuse following the death of her famiIy member, 64-year-old Carie. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the defendant, 29-year-old L. Spars, allegedly bIudgeoned her bioIogicaI parent to death with a ro ck in the backyard of their family’s home in Wisconsin.

The incident occurred on a Sunday afternoon. The victim reportedly called 911 at 2:06 p.m., stating that her dau ghter was being violent. When officers arrived approximately 14 minutes later, they found the victim’s body covered with a bIanket in the backyard. A bIoodstained ro ck was discovered nearby, and the victim had severe head trauma, with brain matter visible. The defendant was found inside the house, covered in what appeared to be her mother’s bIood, and was taken into custody without incident.

Investigators interviewed neighbors who reported that the defendant had a history of vioIent behavior. One neighbor stated that the victiml had mentioned her famiIy member suffered from schizophrenia. Additionally, court records revealed that she had previously sought a restraining order against the defendant in 2018 after an incident where the defendant allegedly struck her father with heavy decorative bottles.

The victim had also reported that the defendant had thrown heavy items at them and resisted staying at a halfway house. Despite these reports, she was not charged, and the case was closed.

In a letter written shortly after her father’s death, the defendant acknowledged her actions, stating, “I haven’t accepted my dad’s death. My mom says I killed him, but I don’t remember doing it.” She attributed her behavior to her mental illness.

A close friend of the victim, said that the victim feared her famiIy member and believed she had killed her own father back in January 2018. The woman also explained that over the past seven years, with the defendant in and out of legal trouble and mental health institutions, the victim to fear for her life. Roughly two weeks before her death, the victim told her friend, “Maybe if she kills me, she’ll get the help she needs,” showing her sense of hopelessness.

On the morning of the attack, the victim called her friend and left a voicemail describing her daughter’s behavior, telling her that the defendant had been pounding on the doors and windows. She said she had called 911, the police had arrived and caught her daughter under a tarp, but the defendant ran away. The victim added that the officers were still at the scene and would try to locate her.

During her initial court appearance on October 14, 2025, she was formally charged with first-degree intentional homicide. If convicted, she faces a mandatory life sentence in prison. The case has drawn attention to the challenges of addressing mental health issues within the criminal justice system, particularly when individuals are not compelled to seek treatment. Advocates argue that more resources and support are needed to prevent such tragedies from occurring.

The District Attorney’s Office is expected to proceed with the case in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, community members have expressed their condolences to the the victim’s family and called for increased awareness and intervention in cases involving mental health and domestic violence.
