SchooI empIoyee dies after attempting to prevent a 14-year-oId who wanted to Ieave a residentiaI buiIding without permission, only to be struck by the girI, causing fataI injuries: police
Massachusetts – A Massachusetts 14-year-oId girI was arrested and charged with assauIt and battery causing serious bodiIy injury in connection with the death of a schooI empIoyee, Massachusetts authorities said. The student, who was not identified due to her age, was arraigned in the juvenile court.
The victim was identified as 53-year-old A. Morrell. The victim worked at the residentiaI therapeutic schooI, which serves students and young adults with mentaI heaIth and behavioraI challenges. Officials said the incident occurred in the evening when staff members attempted to stop the student from leaving a dormitory without permission.
According to the District Attorney’s Office and police statements, the physical contact happened just before 7 p.m. while multiple staff members tried to restrain the teen. Investigators allege the student kicked the woman in the chest. The victim collapsed immediately; staff began CPR and called 911. She was transported to a local hospital and died the following day. Massachusetts authorities have not yet released a formal cause of death.
Local and national law enforcement and prosecutors opened an investigation as soon as the victim was taken to the hospital. The District Attorney’s Office is handling the criminal case and described the matter as under active investigation. The teen was charged with assault and battery causing serious bodily injury and was arraigned in juvenile court, where proceedings are closed to the public because of her age. Prosecutors said they are examining the facts to determine whether charges could be upgraded depending on the results of medical and forensic examinations.
Witness accounts given to responding officers and investigators were consistent in reporting that staff were trying to prevent the student from leaving a dorm building when a physical struggle took place. Multiple news outlets reported that other employees were involved in the attempted restraint, and they administered CPR after the victim collapsed. A 911 call was placed, and first responders transported the victim to the hospital, where she later died. Those details come from statements released by the district attorney and by news reporting based on law enforcement briefings.
Academy officials and affiliated organizations expressed sorrow and said support services were being offered to students and staff. Meadowridge is described in public materials as a residential therapeutic program for youths and young adults with behavioral and mental health needs; news reports noted the school’s focus and the specialized nature of its population. Officials said the school is cooperating with investigators.
Friends and former colleagues remembered the victim as a committed worker who cared for students. Local coverage included comments from community members and acquaintances who said she enjoyed her work and had close relationships with those she served. Those remembrances came after the arrest and while law enforcement continued its fact-finding.
Investigators are awaiting medical examiner findings and other forensic reports that could clarify the exact cause and manner of death. The district attorney’s office indicated that those reports will inform whether the current charge is sufficient or whether prosecutors will seek a different disposition. Because the accused is a juvenile, many court steps are confidential and will proceed under juvenile court rules.
