Eugene Springfield Fire warns of brush fire risk after debris burn spreads near Pine Grove Road

Eugene, OR – Despite a long and cool spring, fire danger remains high in Lane County. On May 23, just before 5 p.m., a debris burn near Pine Grove Road quickly spread out of control, prompting a multi-agency response.
Eugene Springfield Fire (ESF) units, along with the Oregon Department of Forestry and Lane Fire Authority, worked together to contain the blaze. Officials say the fire started when a property owner attempted to burn debris, underscoring the ongoing risk of brush fires even in cooler months.
“Just because it’s been a cool spring doesn’t mean fire season isn’t coming,” the agency cautioned.
ESF is reminding residents who live in areas where open burning is allowed to take extreme precautions. That includes keeping a water source nearby, never leaving fires unattended, and observing all local regulations.
As Memorial Day weekend and the summer season approach, authorities are urging the public to be especially cautious with cooking and recreational fires, anticipating a busy and potentially dangerous fire season.
“Don’t contribute to it,” ESF warned in its statement.
