City officials remind citizens of early reopening and upcoming repairs on historic Columbia River Highway viaduct
Oregon – The Oregon Department of Transportation has announced the early reopening of a section of the Historic Columbia River Highway (U.S. 30) between Wahkeena Falls and Multnomah Falls, originally scheduled to reopen on Memorial Day 2025.
The closure allowed crews to restore the west viaduct, a National Historic Landmark elevated roadway vital for traffic near Multnomah Falls.
Restoration work included patching the original decorative concrete, reinforcing the structure, and pouring a new road surface.
Over the summer, travelers can expect periodic single lane closures with flaggers directing traffic to allow crews to finish cleanup and complete railing repairs.
One lane will remain open for vehicles and bicyclists, though the viaduct will remain closed to pedestrians.
Looking ahead, ODOT plans to close the east viaduct near Multnomah Falls from Fall 2025 through Spring 2026 to perform similar repairs.
Prior to this full closure, periodic single lane closures will be in effect with flagger control as crews prepare for the upcoming work.
Officials urge motorists and visitors to plan accordingly and remain patient as these important preservation efforts continue to maintain the safety and historic integrity of this iconic highway.
