Eugene, OR – The Eugene Police Department honored Officer Oscar Duley, remembering his service and sacrifice nearly a century after he was killed while assisting the Lane County Sheriff’s Office during a liquor raid in Marcola.

Duley was 35 years old when he gave his life in the line of duty in 1930. According to the department, he was known throughout Eugene as “Duley the Wrestling Cop,” reflecting both his athletic ability and his reputation as a dedicated public servant.

The department noted that Duley was scheduled to wrestle at the Lane County Fair on the night he was killed, highlighting the energy and personality he brought to the Eugene community beyond his work as a police officer.

His death came while he was assisting the Lane County Sheriff’s Office during a liquor raid in Marcola. Nearly 100 years later, Eugene Police said his courage and commitment continue to serve as an example for members of the department.

The department described Duley as a symbol of service, resilience and the commitment expected of those who wear the badge.

“Nearly a century later, his courage still shines,” the department said.

Eugene Police said Duley’s legacy remains part of the department’s history and continues to inspire officers serving the community today.

The department also used the occasion to remember other fallen law enforcement officers whose sacrifices have helped protect and shape Eugene and surrounding communities.

Officials emphasized that the passage of time has not diminished the significance of Duley’s sacrifice. His service continues to be remembered by the department and the community he served.

“He will never be forgotten,” Eugene Police said.
