Eugene firefighters battle four-hour blaze that engulfed large rural home as difficult access and lack of fire hydrants complicate response
Eugene, OR – Eugene Springfield Fire crews spent approximately four hours battling a fire that engulfed a large, two-story home in rural southeast Eugene early Wednesday, with difficult access and the lack of nearby fire hydrants creating additional challenges for firefighters.
The fire was reported just before 4 a.m. on Oct. 21 in the 85000 block of Christensen Road, within Eugene Rural Fire District No. 1, which contracts with the cities of Eugene and Springfield for fire protection services.
When firefighters arrived, they found the two-story home fully involved in flames, according to Eugene Springfield Fire.
Crews faced difficult conditions because the property was accessed by a long, narrow rural driveway. Numerous vehicles surrounding the structure further restricted the movement of fire apparatus and limited access to the burning home.
Initial reports indicated that unauthorized individuals were occupying the property. Firefighters made contact with the occupants, who reported that everyone had safely exited the building.
Initial searches of the structure found no victims. No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported.
Firefighters continued suppression and cleanup operations for approximately four hours before completing their work at the scene.
The response was complicated by the absence of fire hydrants in the area, requiring crews to bring in water using specialized tanker vehicles known as water tenders.
Eugene Springfield Fire deployed two of its own water tenders, while Pleasant Hill-Goshen Fire District provided two additional tenders. Lane Fire Authority also supplied one tender through an automatic aid agreement.
The coordinated response allowed firefighters to maintain the water supply needed to battle the blaze in the rural area.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Eugene Springfield Fire Marshal’s Office, with assistance from the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials have not released further details about how the fire started or the extent of the damage to the home.
