Eugene Police releases statement after emergency alert about incident near Elmira Road is sent countywide

on

Eugene, OR – Lane County residents received an emergency alert related to an active incident Eugene Police were handling near Elmira Road and Archie Street, prompting the department to clarify why the notification reached people across the county.

The alert was initiated by Central Lane 911 and was intended to warn residents in the immediate area to stay indoors while advising others to avoid the location. According to Eugene Police, the incident has since been fully resolved and there is no longer an active threat to the community.

The department explained that the countywide emergency alert system allows the sender to select both the type of notification and the geographic area where it should be distributed. Several technologies are used to deliver emergency messages, including Reverse 911 calls to landlines, emergency alerts through television and radio, and Wireless Emergency Alerts sent to cell phones connected to selected cellular towers.

Lane County residents can also sign up for opt-in emergency alerts.

According to Eugene Police, the alert issued during the recent incident was intended for Lane County subscribers and Wireless Emergency Alerts covering the smaller neighborhood affected by the incident. However, the notification was inadvertently distributed countywide, resulting in many residents outside the immediate area receiving the message.

The department noted that the emergency alert system relies in part on GPS and cell-tower routing, meaning that even when alerts are properly targeted, notifications can sometimes reach devices outside the intended area.

The incident near Elmira Road and Archie Street has now been resolved, and police said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Eugene Police said the department is continuing to train on the emergency alert system and work to improve the delivery of timely and accurate notifications to residents.

The clarification came as officials sought to explain why residents who were not near the incident received an alert intended for a much smaller geographic area.

Police thanked residents for their understanding as agencies continue working to improve the emergency notification process, emphasizing that public safety remains the priority.
