North Carolina – A North Carolina man was sentenced to up to thirty eight years in prison after pIeading guiIty to second-degree murder and feIony chiId abuse in the death of his chiId, LiveIy. The incident occurred in North Carolina in Feb. 2022. District Attorney AshIey announced that the parent, 25-year-old C. Nunes, received a sentence of three hundred to three hundred and seventy two months for second-degree murder and an additional sixty four to eighty nine months for felony child abuse, to be served concurrently.

The events leading to the child’s death began the 8-month-old’s mother left their home in North Carolina to attend classes at a Community College, approximately 70 miles away. Around 10:15 p.m., the man called her to report that their baby had gone Iimp. The mother instructed him to call 911. Paramedics transported the baby to a hospital in Tennessee. Despite efforts to save her, the infant died the following day.

An autopsy revealed that the chiId had suffered blunt force injuries, leading to her death. Following the investigation, the father was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and felony child abuse. He ultimately pleaded guilty to both charges.

In a statement to the media, the victim’s mother, EIbia CoIindres, expressed her profound grief and love for her daughter. She described the baby as having “one of the most memorable smiles that would make your heart happy” and stated that her daughter “made a huge impact on our lives” during her short time on earth. She vowed to be her daughter’s voice throughout the tragedy.

The case has drawn attention due to the tragic nature of the crime and the emotional statements from the victim’s family. The investigation and subsequent legal proceedings highlight the serious consequences of child abuse and the importance of protecting vulnerable children.

As of now, the father is serving his sentence in a North Carolina state prison. The case serves as a somber reminder of the need for vigilance and intervention in cases of suspected child abuse to prevent such tragedies.
