One person seriously injured in West Eugene house fire as crews battle flames spreading to attic
Eugene, OR – One person was seriously injured in a house fire in West Eugene Friday evening after flames spread across two floors and into the attic, prompting a large response from Eugene Springfield Fire crews.
Firefighters were dispatched to a reported house fire in the 800 block of N. Bertelsen after callers reported that multiple people might be inside the residence.
The report prompted additional resources to respond to the scene.
Engine 8, operating from the Danebo station, arrived less than three minutes after dispatch and reported heavy flames coming from the front of the house.
Crews immediately deployed a hose line and began fighting the fire.
Firefighters encountered flames on both the first and second floors, with fire spreading into the attic.
The search for potential victims was complicated by hoarding conditions inside the home and around the property.
Crews used saws to create openings in the structure so they could search areas where people might have survived.
One person managed to escape the home before firefighters arrived and was transported to Riverbend Hospital with serious injuries.
After searching the residence, crews found no additional victims. No other injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
