Eugene Springfield Fire partners with community to reduce wildfire risk near Spencer Butte
Eugene, OR – Over the weekend, Eugene Springfield Fire teamed up with residents near Spencer Butte to enhance Defensible Space around homes and reduce the risk of wildfires. The department thanked neighborhood leaders for organizing the event and expressed appreciation to everyone who participated in the effort.
The initiative was part of an ongoing push to increase wildfire preparedness in high-risk areas by encouraging property owners to take preventative action. Defensible Space refers to the area around a home where vegetation and other flammable materials are managed to slow the spread of fire and protect structures.
Eugene Springfield Fire is urging residents to take similar steps on their own properties. Some of the key fire safety practices include clearing gutters and roofs of dry debris, removing combustible vegetation close to homes, trimming tree limbs to keep them from hanging low to the ground, and eliminating ladder fuels that allow fire to climb from the ground into the tree canopy.
These proactive measures not only help protect individual homes but also support the broader community’s safety during wildfire season.
