OPRD seeking public comments on proposed rule updates for e-assisted bicycle use in Oregon State Parks and the ocean shore
Oregon – The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) is inviting public feedback on proposed rule updates regarding the use of electric-assisted (e-assisted) bicycles at Oregon State Parks and the ocean shore, with comments being accepted until April 1.
The proposed updates aim to clarify the definitions of e-assisted bicycles, specify areas where their use is allowed and prohibited, and establish safety guidelines for operators, other visitors, and park resources. These updates would allow e-assisted bicycles access to many areas of the parks and ocean shore in similar ways to non-electric bicycles, with added safety provisions.
An internal workgroup developed the proposed updates after conducting extensive research and discussions with partner agencies, subject matter experts, and the Rules Advisory Committee (RAC). In summer 2024, OPRD also conducted a public survey to better understand the needs and usage patterns of e-assisted bicycles.
The goal of the updates is to balance recreational access with the protection of natural, scenic, cultural, historic, and recreational resources in Oregon’s parks and shorelines.
The public is invited to comment on the proposed updates through 5 p.m. Apr. 1, 2025:
- Submit comments online on the rules webpage
- Attend a virtual public hearing Monday, Mar. 17 or Wednesday Mar. 26 at 5:30 PM
