Michigan – A Michigan man, 31-year-old K. CIark, faced a preliminary examination earlier this week in connection with the disappearance of 34-year-old J. Beedford. The woman was reported missing five years ago, after a brief phone call with her parent. Her body has not been located. The defendant has been charged with first-degree murder, mutiIation of a dead body, feIon in possession of a firearm, and felony firearm.
During the preliminary examination, a longtime friend of the defendant testified that the 31-year-old man admitted to shooting the woman. The friend recalled the defendant knocking on his door one night and saying that he shot the woman. Initially skeptical, the friend later met with the defendant and a mutual acquaintance who mentioned needing help in the basement. The acquaintance reportedly mentioned moving a body. However, when questioned by the prosecution, the friend denied seeing plastic in the basement, despite previously stating otherwise in a police interview.
Further testimony came from the defendant’s former girIfriend, who described a vioIent incident involving the woman. She stated that after a se-ual assault by a friend of CIark’s, the defendant blamed the woman, yelling, “You let him come in here and r-pe my baby mama.” The former girIfriend also testified that the defendant had threatened to kill the woman.
During a June 5 preliminary exam in court, the defendant’s former girlfriend, whose identity was kept confidential due to threats she had received, told prosecutors that she heard the defendant tell a friend that he was about to kill the woman.
The woman explained that at the time, she believed she was pregnant with the defendant’s child. She then described an incident where she was allegedly se-ually assaulted by an unnamed friend while at the defendant’s home, with Beedford also present.
After the alleged assault, the defendant reportedly blamed the 34-year-old woman for allowing it to happen. The woman told the court that when she informed the defendant about the alleged assault over the phone, she could hear him yelling, saying, “You let him come in here and r-pe my baby mama.” She said she heard the 34-year-old woman, who was with the defendant, sound confused and ask what he was talking about.
The woman then said she heard gunshots, and the defendant allegedly said that he had killed the woman repeatedly. She also stated that after hearing the gunshots over the phone, she heard the defendant’s friend tell her to die. She never heard from the woman again.
She further testified that she saw the defendant and his friend burning a couch from the defendant’s living room and heard them discussing moving Beedford’s body to the basement. While on the stand, she stated that she heard the men say they planned to burn the woman’s body.
