Alabama – An Alabama woman is facing capitaI murder charges in connection with the death of her child, Jonnah. The incident occurred earlier this month at the family’s home in Alabama. The defendant’s preliminary hearing took place last week, where Investigator Ewans provided testimony regarding the events surrounding the child’s death.

According to the investigator, deputies responded to a medical call at the defendant’s, 35-year-old M. Tornton, residence in Alabama just after midnight on August 1. Upon arrival, they found the 8-month-old child unresponsive and severely beaten. Life-saving efforts were initiated by deputies and continued by EMS personnel, who managed to regain a pulse before transporting the child to a hospital. Tragically, the baby was pronounced dead at the local hospital during the transfer.

The parent was initially charged with aggravated child abuse. However, after the infant succumbed to his injuries, the charge was upgraded to capital murder. During the preliminary hearing, the investigator testified that he arrived at the scene around 1:30 a.m. and found the mother standing outside the home covered in bIood. Inside, bIoodstains were observed in the victim’s room. The investigator also mentioned that the woman’s husband reported she had woken him up, saying she had killed a “de mon.”

The mom’s statements to authorities further complicated the case. She allegedly admitted to beating the child and shouted at paramedics while they performed CPR. However, when questioned the following morning, her account changed. She claimed she had swaddled the baby and put him to bed at 7 o’clock, stating, “Tried to give him CPR… That’s all.” The defendant appeared intoxicated at the time, and a bIood sample was taken. Two pints of vodka and two shooters were reportedly found empty at the home.

The investigation revealed that the child had small, circular bruises above his right ankle, consistent with being picked up by the leg. The severity of the injuries suggested he had been slammed against a wall and floor. The mother remains in custody at the county jail without bond, awaiting further legal proceedings. When asked what he believed had occurred, the investigator said it appeared the child had been grabbed by the body and swung against the wall before his head struck the floor. He explained that the blood evidence matched a person or object hitting the wall and transferring blood, and that the child’s head appeared misshapen, suggesting it had impacted the floor.

The investigator also testified that another investigator spoke with the woman’s husband, who said he had gone to sleep around 7 p.m. after receiving an alcohol from a delivery person. He was later awoken by his wife, who told him she had killed a demon.

If convicted of capital murder, the mother could face the death penalty. The case has garnered significant attention due to the tragic nature of the incident and the disturbing details revealed during the investigation. The community remains in shock as authorities continue to process the evidence and prepare for the upcoming trial.
