ESF honors victims of Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire on 115th anniversary
Eugene, OR – Eugene Springfield Fire paused on March 25 to remember the 146 workers, most of them women, who died in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire 115 years ago.
Officials said the tragedy, caused by locked doors and a collapsing fire escape, left workers trapped as flames spread through the upper floors in less than 30 minutes. The fire highlighted the dangers of inadequate safety measures and became a catalyst for labor and fire safety reforms across the country.
Eugene Springfield Fire emphasized that modern fire codes are rooted in the lessons of such tragedies. Every exit requirement, sprinkler, and occupancy limit carries the memory of those who did not survive, reflecting a promise to protect lives.
The department also recognized the ongoing work of the Fire Marshal’s Office, noting that their efforts in education, advocacy, and enforcement continue to honor the victims by preventing similar tragedies in the community.
