Eugene police train with regional agencies to strengthen crisis response skills
Eugene, OR – The Eugene Police Department recently joined crisis negotiation teams from Springfield Police and the Lane County Sheriff’s Office for joint training aimed at improving communication and coordination during high-risk situations.
The training took place at Marist High School and involved a simulated hostage situation designed to test the teams’ ability to respond under pressure.
During the exercise, negotiators faced a scenario involving multiple hostage takers who remained in constant communication with the Crisis Negotiation Team. Officers from several agencies acted as hostage takers, while police cadets participated as hostage role players.
Throughout the training, negotiators worked together to establish communication, gather important information, build rapport, and work toward a peaceful resolution.
The Eugene Police Department said the exercise allowed regional partners to strengthen the teamwork and collaboration needed during critical incidents where communication plays a key role.
Officials said joint training opportunities like this help ensure crisis teams are prepared to work together when responding to dangerous and complex situations.
The department emphasized that preparation and coordination between agencies are essential to helping resolve high-risk incidents safely.
