Oregon fire marshal urges safe and legal fireworks use during 2025 sales season

Oregon – As the 2025 fireworks retail season begins June 23 and runs through July 6, the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office is reminding residents to celebrate the Fourth of July responsibly and within the law. The agency’s message is simple: “Keep it legal. Keep it safe.”

Oregonians are encouraged to check local rules regarding both the sale and use of fireworks before lighting any, especially since some areas have additional restrictions due to wildfire risks. Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple emphasized the importance of understanding what’s allowed where you are to prevent fires and injuries.

Consumer-legal fireworks can only be purchased from permitted retailers and may not be used on public lands, national parks, Bureau of Land Management properties, Oregon state parks, beaches, campgrounds, or private lands protected by the Oregon Department of Forestry.

Officials urge following the four Bs of fireworks safety:

  • Be prepared: Keep water or a hose nearby.

  • Be safe: Keep children and pets away; avoid dry grass or flammable materials.

  • Be responsible: Don’t relight duds and soak used fireworks before disposal.

  • Be aware: Use only legal fireworks and only where permitted.

Oregon law prohibits fireworks that fly, explode, or travel more than 12 feet horizontally without a permit, including bottle rockets, Roman candles, and firecrackers. Violations are Class B misdemeanors with fines up to $2,500. Those responsible for fireworks-related damage may face financial liability, including parents for damage caused by their children.

Residents are urged to enjoy celebrations safely and legally to protect themselves, their communities, and Oregon’s natural resources.
