43-year-old man arrested after pulling knife on store employee during robbery at local 7-Eleven

Eugene, OR – On April 1, 2025, Eugene Police responded to a call at 3:11 a.m. about a disorderly man with a knife at the 7-Eleven located at 1107 S. Bertelsen Road. While a separate group of officers was handling an armed suicidal subject call, additional officers were dispatched to the 7-Eleven. Upon arrival, officers identified the suspect, 43-year-old Matthew Anthony Marks, sitting outside the store.
According to witnesses, Marks entered the store and inquired about a lighter. After being shown one, he walked out without paying. When confronted by an employee, Marks threatened to kill the employee and pointed a knife at him. The employee managed to call for help, which led to the police response.
Upon arrival, officers kept their distance due to the suspect’s weapon and began issuing commands. Marks, however, covered himself with a blanket. As officers attempted to use less-lethal options to detain him, they were unsuccessful. After some time, a team of officers moved in, removed the blanket, and a brief struggle ensued before Marks was arrested. At the time of his arrest, Marks was still holding the knife.
Marks was transported to the Lane County Jail and booked on multiple charges, including Robbery in the First Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Resisting Arrest, and Disorderly Conduct. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the confrontation. The incident highlights the importance of maintaining safety when dealing with armed individuals.
