24-year-old man arrested, charged with murder after he killed the woman he previously had a relationship with

Eugene, OR -On September 1, 2024, Eugene Police received reports of a loud dispute with shots fired outside a home near Royal Avenue and Ruskin Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a woman in her 20s deceased with gunshot wounds. The Eugene Police Violent Crimes Unit took over the investigation.

The victim was identified as Haley Leann Mackin, age 23. On September 3, 2024, Brandon Smith, age 24, was arrested and lodged at Lane County Jail. Smith faces charges of Murder in the Second Degree, Assault in the First Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Tampering with Physical Evidence.

Smith was taken into custody by Eugene Police Department behind 4th Avenue and Pearl Street at 5:05 a.m. Springfield Police and Lane County Sheriff’s Office assisted in his apprehension.

Smith and the victim, 23-year-old Haley Mackin, had previously been in a relationship.
