Large fire involving palletized wood shavings breaks out at Coastal Farm & Ranch in Eugene, prompting early morning response from ESF

Eugene, OR – Eugene Springfield Fire (ESF) crews responded to a reported structure fire at Coastal Farm & Ranch in Eugene early Saturday morning, Oct. 10, but determined the incident involved a large outdoor fire among palletized wood shavings in the parking lot.

At approximately 6:22 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to the business at 2200 W. 6th Ave. after multiple callers reported a fire of unknown type.

Tower 2, responding from the Whiteaker Station, arrived in about four minutes as part of a first-alarm response. Crews located the fire, assessed the scene and established incident command before downgrading the response after determining the fire was outside and involved stacked wood shavings.

After knocking down the flames, firefighters worked with Coastal Farm & Ranch staff, who used a forklift to separate the piles of material. This allowed crews to inspect the affected area, address remaining hot spots and complete extinguishment.

The ESF Fire Marshal’s Office and Eugene Police Department assisted with the fire investigation and traffic control.

Fire officials said the fire was contained to the area where it originated, involving the palletized wood shavings in the parking lot. No other injuries were reported, and officials did not provide further details about the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage.
