Nebraska – A Nebraska coupIe, 36-year-old Rylan and 28-year-old Tonya, was taken into custody and charged with chiId abuse resuIting in the death of their baby in Nebraska. Both parents remain in the county jail pending further court proceedings.

The investigation process began last month after the baby’s dad called 911 and told the dispatcher that his 4-month-old daughter had died. Both he and his spouse were present at the home when officers arrived. The man told police he had been “pIaying rough” with the baby the day before, which led to her crying uncontroIIably.

He claimed he gave her a bottle and put her to bed late that night. Hours later, the victim’s mom noticed the baby had not woken up as usual. The father said he found her cold and unresponsive, attempted CPR, then called his mother before dialing 911.

The victim’s mom, however, told Nebraska authoriteis she had returned from grocery shopping the day before to find the baby crying in what she described as “the worst cry I had ever heard.” She wanted to seek medical care but said her husband told her not to.

An autopsy confirmed the baby died from a traumatic brain injury consistent with shaking. A child abuse specialist at Children’s Hospital also concluded the injuries were non-accidental and said immediate medical attention could have improved the infant’s chances of survival.

Investigators also learned the woman had previously seen the man shake the baby when frustrated, and court records show she had searched online for information about shaken baby syndrome in the days following her daughter’s death. Court documents also show texts from the woman to her husband questioning him about past injuries she had noticed on the baby.

Both are being held in the county jail on suspicion of child abuse resulting in death. Their bonds are set at 10% of $1.5 million, with conditions that they not contact each other or any minors. The mother is also ordered to turn in her passport if she posts bond. Both are due back in court on October 1.
