Oregon – An Oregon man was ordered to spend more than ten years behind bars after being convicted of first-degree assauIt for severeIy injuring his 1-year-old child. The incident occurred in April last year. According to the District Attorney’s Office, the defendant, 41-year-old J. Washiington, reportedly struck his child in the stomach with such force that it caused a perfo ration of the chiId’s smaII lntestine, leading to life-threatening injuries.
The child was rushed to a local hospital, where medical staff determined the severity of the trauma. The parent was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with multiple offenses, including first-degree assault, third-degree assault, and first-degree criminal mistreatment. The jury found him guilty of first-degree assault, leading to the sentencing.
The investigation into the assault began when the child’s mother, who had custody of the 1-year-old, brought him to the hospital with signs of severe abdominal trauma. Medical professionals immediately alerted law enforcement due to the nature of the injuries. Detectives interviewed the mother, who stated that the man, her former partner, had been alone with their son earlier that day. She reported that the defendant had become frustrated with the child and struck him in the stomach. The mother’s account was corroborated by medical evidence, leading to the defendant’s arrest.
The defendant ignored the mother’s request to take the child to the hospital and instead brought him to her. Realizing the situation was critical, she rushed him to the emergency room. Prosecutors wrote that the child underwent immediate surgery after doctors discovered his intestine was perforated, with fluid and air leaking into his abdomen. Medical experts determined the injury resulted from blunt force trauma and indicated a high likelihood of child physical abuse.
The boy’s injuries made it impossible for him to eat or keep food down, as bile was flooding into his digestive system. The defendant later admitted to the child’s mother that the boy had been bothering him that night, and in frustration, he punched the boy twice in the stomach.
During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence of the defendant’s prior history of domestic violence, including previous incidents of physical abuse. They argued that his actions were part of a pattern of escalating violence. Defense attorneys contended that the injury was accidental and that he did not intend to harm his child. However, the jury found the evidence presented by the prosecution compelling and convicted the defendant on all charges.
At sentencing, Judge Ramiras remarked on the severity of the crime, stating that the defendant’s actions were “inexcusable and deeply troubling.” He emphasized the need to protect vulnerable individuals, especially children, from such harm. The judge also noted that he had shown no remorse for his actions, which influenced the decision to impose a lengthy prison sentence.
