Man told poIice his grandchiIdren found ‘hard objects’ in the lce cream they had recentIy purchased, later confirmed to be a controIIed substance, after he pIaced the crushed piIIs in them; charged
North Carolina – A North Carolina man was taken into custody earlier this week and charged with feIony chiId abuse, feIony possession of a ScheduIe I narcotic, and two counts of feIony contaminating food or drink with a controIIed substance. The charges stem from an incident earlier this month when the defendant, 66-year-old J. YokeIy, allegedly placed crushed piIIs containing MDMA and cocaine into an lce-cream purchased for his grandchiIdren. Neither of the girls, 15 and 15 years old, ingested the piIIs, and they discovered the foreign objects before consuming the ice cream.
According to North Carolina authorities, the defendant flagged down officers at a local gas station after the girls found the piIIs in their lce cream. He claimed that the piIIs were already in it when purchased. However, surveillance footage from the store contradicted his statement, showing the defendant placing the pills into the lce cream himself. The pills were field-tested and confirmed to contain controIIed substance.
Following his arrest, he was booked into the county detention center and released the same day on a $100,000 secured bond. He has not yet entered a plea and is scheduled to appear in court on September 11, 2025.
He resigned from his position as chair of the County Board of Elections on August 28, 2025, following calls for his resignation from State Auditor BoIiek and other officials. In his resignation letter, he maintained his innocence, stating he was falsely accused and remained prayerfully confident that I will be exonerated of all accusations levied against me.
The local police department has stated that the investigation is ongoing, and further testing of the substances is being conducted at the state lab. The department emphasized that this case is particularly concerning due to the familial relationship involved and the breach of trust it represents.
This incident has garnered significant media attention and public concern, highlighting issues of trust and safety within families and the potential dangers of substance misuse. As the legal proceedings continue, the community remains vigilant and supportive of the affected individuals.
