Governor Tina Kotek visits Burns Paiute Reservation and pledges flood recovery support for Harney County and beyond
Oregon – Governor Tina Kotek and First Lady Aimee Kotek Wilson traveled to the City of Burns and the Burns Paiute Reservation in Harney County to meet with local and Tribal leaders, emergency response volunteers, and residents affected by recent historic flooding. The visit underscored the state’s commitment to supporting recovery efforts in the region.
During the visit, Governor Kotek announced an initial $40,000 emergency commitment to cover landfill fees for residents removing flood debris from their homes. She also pledged to work with the state legislature, Oregon’s Congressional delegation, and the Burns Paiute Tribe to secure both federal and state recovery assistance—not just for Harney County, but also for Douglas, Coos, and Curry counties, which have also experienced recent flood damage.
“I’m heartbroken to see the devastation in this community. While the flood waters are receding, the recovery is just beginning. And it’s a long game,” said Governor Kotek. “People on the ground here are inspiring.
The volunteers I met with—whether with the Red Cross, faith groups, the tribe, or neighbors looking out for one another—have been working in tough conditions and need all the help they can get. I want this entire community to know I am resolved to fight for every federal and state recovery dollar I can.”
Governor Kotek and the First Lady were accompanied by Representative Mark Owens (R-Crane), Oregon National Guard Adjutant General Alan Gronewold, and Colonel Russel Gibson. The visit included meetings with emergency responders and a firsthand look at some of the damage sustained by the area due to the floods.
The Governor emphasized that while initial aid is being deployed, broader recovery efforts will require long-term collaboration with state and federal partners. State officials are also evaluating potential legislative actions to bolster recovery initiatives for the affected communities.
