Eugene Springfield Fire rescues person trapped in Willamette River low head dam near I-5 bridge
Eugene, OR – Eugene Springfield Fire crews responded to a water rescue on the Willamette River in Springfield’s Glenwood neighborhood after a person became trapped near a low head dam, officials said.
The incident happened at approximately 5:30 p.m. on July 11, when callers reported that an individual was stuck in the low head dam area near the I-5 bridge.
Eugene Springfield Fire responded with two water rescue boats, two chiefs, and a medic to assist with the emergency. Crews from Boat 5 at the Gateway station were able to reach the individual and safely free the person from the dam.
After the rescue, firefighters transported two people back to the West D boat landing. Officials said neither person required medical assistance following the incident.
Eugene Springfield Fire credited the use of life jackets as a key factor in the positive outcome, reminding residents and visitors about the importance of wearing proper safety equipment when on the water.
Fire officials also issued a safety reminder for those traveling on the Willamette River near the I-5 bridge, urging boaters to use “River Right” and never attempt to go over the low head dam.
Low head dams can create dangerous currents and hazardous conditions for people in the water, and officials encouraged river users to remain aware of their surroundings and follow safety guidelines while recreating.
