Two arrested after incident involving man on top of moving vehicle
Eugene, OR – The Eugene Police Department arrested two men following a late-night incident involving a vehicle on Echo Hollow Road on March 7.
According to police, at about 11:24 p.m. the Central Lane Communications Center received a 911 call from a man reporting he was on top of a Toyota Camry traveling down Echo Hollow Road. The driver, identified as 27-year-old Ryan Scott Beairsto, also contacted dispatch and reported the man on the vehicle was a suspect in the strangulation of a woman.
Shortly afterward, another caller reported the driver had braked and the man on the vehicle, identified as 26-year-old Trevor Lee Wilbanks, had been thrown off. Beairsto then drove home.
Officers responded to the area and located Wilbanks injured in the street near Dove Lane and Scandia Street. He was not cooperative with officers about the incident. The Eugene Springfield Fire Department provided medical assistance and transported Wilbanks to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators later located Beairsto at his home. After an investigation, officers arrested him and booked him into the Lane County Jail on charges including DUII, reckless driving, two counts of reckless endangering, and second-degree assault.
Police said the investigation also established probable cause that Wilbanks had strangled a 28-year-old woman from behind while she was sitting in Beairsto’s vehicle. Beairsto reportedly removed Wilbanks from the car and drove away, but Wilbanks then jumped onto the moving vehicle and punched the windshield.
At the hospital, Wilbanks was issued a criminal citation for strangulation and second-degree disorderly conduct. The investigation remains ongoing.
