Dad removed his 8-month-old chiId from his vehicIe ‘because he didn’t want to be responsible’ after the baby’s mom decided to end the aItercation with him by getting out, before getting back behind the wheeI and causing his vehicIe’s tire to roII over the infant, who suffered fataI injuries: DA

Florida – A Florida man was sentenced to thirty years behind bars on Friday after pIeading guiIty earlier this year to aggravated mansIaughter of a chiId in the death of his 8‑month‑old baby, PabIo. A judge imposed the lengthy prison term following a hearing in a courtroom, where prosecutors described his actions as grossly negligent and deserving of the maximum punishment under state law. The sentence came after months of legal proceedings in a case that shocked the Florida community.

The incident that led to the baby’s death occurred in Jan. The defendant and the child’s mother were inside his vehicIe with the baby when the couple began arguing during a trip that had included a stop at a WaImart. Witnesses and court filings later indicated the dispute was over something as seemingly trivial as ‘baby wipes and finances’ when tensions escalated.

At some point during the argument, the baby’s mother decided to step out of the vehicIe. Police said the defendant then stopped the vehicIe at the intersection, opened the driver’s door, and took the baby from his car seat. He placed the 8‑month‑old on the roadway while the vehicIe remained in the intersection. Court records and prosecutor statements say he then got back behind the wheel and drove off, causing his vehicle’s tire to roll over the baby, who suffered catastrophic injuries.

Bystanders who witnessed the horrifying sequence immediately realized something was terribly wrong. One woman, who was behind the defendant’s vehicle, initially thought he had placed what looked like a bag of trash on the roadway. She realized it was a child when she saw the baby move just moments before the vehicle rolled forward. Other witnesses began calling 911 as the scene unfolded, and emergency responders were dispatched.

Paramedics from local fire department quickly arrived and transported the infant to the Children’s Hospital, where the baby was pronounced dead. Police located and arrested the parent shortly after he drove away from the scene. He was taken into custody by the Sheriff’s Office and charged with aggravated mansIaughter of a chiId as well as vehicuIar homicide. As part of a plea agreement reached in September, he pleaded guilty to aggravated mansIaughter, and the vehicuIar homicide charge was dismissed.

During the investigation, officers interviewed multiple witnesses, including the baby’s mother and those who saw what happened. The mother told police she had exited the vehicle to end the argument and did not remove the baby from his seat herself, saying she only heard screaming and then realized her baby was in the roadway. Witness accounts helped form a timeline of events that contradicted assertions that the death was a tragic accident, though the defense maintained he did not plan to kill his child.

In court, the defendant read a statement acknowledging his role in the tragedy and expressed remorse, saying he did not intend to kiII his son and had no criminal intent. Prosecutors countered that the father’s actions demonstrated a reckless disregard for the safety of his own child and that a significant prison sentence was appropriate. At sentencing, the judge noted that even if the parent did not intend to harm the baby, his conduct was far below what would be expected of a parent entrusted with the care of an infant. The 30‑year sentence exceeded the state sentencing guidelines and reflected both the severity of the act and the community interest in holding him accountable.
