Illinois – An Illinois man was arrested Saturday and charged with first‑degree murder after allegedly kiIIing his parent, 67-year-old Anapam, inside their home in Illinois. According to prosecutors, emergency responders were dispatched around 10:45 a.m. Saturday to the home after a call reporting a man unresponsive and bIeeding from the head. When officers arrived, they found the victim Iying in bed and suffering from serious head trauma. A sIedgehamer — later identified as the weapon used in the attack — was discovered next to the bed.

An autopsy by the medical examiner’s office ruled the death a homicide, concluding that bIunt head trauma caused by multiple blows to the head killed the elderly man. Prosecutors said he had sustained a fractured skuII and a broken nose. During his first court appearance Monday, prosecutors disclosed that a protective order issued earlier this year forbade the defendant, 28‑year-old A. Patel, from having any contact with his parent. That order came after he allegedly threatened to kiII his parent at least once.

Prosecutors told the judge that on the morning of the killing, the victim’s spouse had tried calling both her partner and her son while at work. Because neither answered, she returned home about 10:30 a.m. She entered the family home — through an unlocked garage, which was unusual — and spoke to her son, who told her he had taken care of his father and told her to go check on him. When she did, she found her spouse covered in bIood and immediately called 911.

When police arrived, the defendant reportedly surrendered peacefully, raising his hands. Officers noted apparent bIood spatter on his shirt.

According to prosecutors, after his arrest and during questioning, the 28‑year-old told investigators he believed it was his reIigious duty to kiII his parent. He claimed the elderly man had purportedly abused him as a child — a claim doctors reportedly found to be without basis and dismiss as “deIusionaI.” Court records further indicate that the defendant had previously been hospitalized for psychiatric reasons and was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

The judge overseeing the case ordered that the defendant remain held without bond. In setting the conditions for his pre‑trial detention, the judge cited the defendant’s past psychiatric hospitalizations, his history of violent threats toward the victim, his violation of the protective order and apparent inability to control anger or violent impulses. The judge also forbade him from having any contact with his mother.
