Eugene City Council hires new independent police auditor to oversee department
Eugene, OR – The Eugene City Council has appointed Craig Renetzky as the city’s new Independent Police Auditor.
The office of the Independent Police Auditor operates as a civilian oversight entity, reporting directly to and funded by the City Council. It functions independently from the Eugene Police Department (EPD), and none of its employees are members of the police department.
Renetzky, who joins Eugene from Los Angeles, California, brings more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement, civilian oversight, and criminal justice education.
“I take great pride and honor in being named the new Independent Police Auditor,” Renetzky said. “Police officers and all Eugene Police employees should be held to the highest standards of integrity, and, as the Independent Police Auditor, I will work to ensure that this is the case. All complaints will be handled with an emphasis on a fair resolution for all parties involved.”
The mission of the Independent Police Auditor’s Office is to provide an accessible, safe, impartial, and responsive intake system for complaints against EPD employees. The office works to ensure accountability, fairness, transparency, and trust in the complaint system through intake, classification, auditing, and adjudication of complaints. The office also receives police commendations.
