Chlorine leak at Springfield water treatment facility contained with no threat to public

Eugene, OR – Eugene Springfield Fire (ESF) responded to a chlorine leak at the Springfield Utility Board (SUB) water treatment facility located near 28th & M St in Springfield. The call was made when a chlorine tank began leaking at the facility.
The response involved the Eugene Region 2 Hazardous Materials Team, which is staffed by ESF firefighters cross-trained as Hazardous Materials Technicians. Upon arrival, crews identified the leak as stemming from a valve issue. The problem was quickly isolated and mitigated, ensuring there was no threat to the public.
ESF crews are remaining on scene to work with SUB personnel in safely replacing the faulty equipment. The coordinated efforts between fire departments, local agencies, and state programs played a crucial role in resolving the situation without incident.
The Oregon State Fire Marshal’s regional hazardous materials response program, which equips and trains local firefighters to handle hazardous materials incidents, was instrumental in ensuring the success of this operation.
