Oregon Parks and Recreation Department says rangers and volunteers will lead guided First Day Hikes to kick off 2025
Oregon – Whether it’s a scenic coastal sunset hike or a peaceful stroll along a wooded city trail, Oregon’s First Day Hikes program offers something for everyone this New Year’s Day, Wednesday, January 1.
Guided hikes will take place at 30 state parks across Oregon, led by rangers and volunteers. Hike lengths range from a brief quarter-mile walk to a more challenging five-mile trek. Participation in the hikes is free, and the usual day-use parking fee will be waived at participating state parks.
First Day Hikes is a nationwide initiative by America’s State Parks aimed at encouraging outdoor recreation and a connection with nature to kick off the year. Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) has been part of this program since 2012.
“First Day Hikes has become a fun tradition for both visitors and staff on New Year’s Day,” said Lisa Sumption, OPRD Director. “Rangers and volunteers share park history, geology, wildlife, and plants, while visitors enjoy an adventure with friends and family to start the year outdoors.”
Details about hike locations, times, meet-up points, and trail information are available on the Oregon First Day Hikes web page. Some hikes, including those at Champoeg, Detroit Lake, Emigrant Springs, Jackson Kimball, Smith Rock, and Spring Valley Access, require registration.
