Fire crews respond to deadly structure fire in Eugene’s Churchill neighborhood
Eugene, OR – Eugene Springfield Fire responded to a structure fire late Thursday night in Eugene’s Churchill neighborhood that resulted in injuries and a loss of life.
Fire crews were dispatched after calls began coming into Central Lane 911 shortly before 11 p.m. on June 25 reporting a house fire that may have been spreading to another occupancy in the 2500 block of Brittania Place.
Engine 10 from the Bailey Hill station arrived and found a large amount of fire coming from one unit of a two-story fourplex. Firefighters encountered challenging conditions involving the entryway of the multi-unit building and reported victims inside, prompting crews to request a second alarm response.
Emergency crews worked to contain the fire and prevent further spread. Firefighters were able to contain the main body of the fire to the original unit, though crews also had to manage fire that extended into the attic space of an adjoining unit.
One occupant suffered serious injuries and was transported to RiverBend for treatment. A second occupant was located deceased at the scene.
Eugene Springfield Fire said no additional injuries were reported, and occupants from neighboring units were able to safely evacuate.
A large emergency response was sent to the scene, including eight fire companies, four chiefs, four ambulances, two deputy fire marshals, EMS 1, and Support 1.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
