The City of Eugene resumed work May 13 at the River Road and Irving Road intersection, city officials say
Eugene, OR – According to the city officials, the project was originally set to be completed in fall 2023 but ran into conflicts with non-City owned overhead utilities; those have now been relocated.
This project marks a significant milestone as Eugene’s first protected intersection, underscoring the City’s commitment to prioritizing safety and accessibility for people who travel on foot and on wheels.
The River Road at Irving Road intersection has been difficult for vulnerable road users because there were no bike lanes and multiple potentially dangerous junctions.
In response to the challenges people walking, biking and rolling face, the City designed this project with pedestrians and cyclists at the forefront.
Eugene’s first protected intersection will include separated infrastructure for bike riders and pedestrians, including grade separation, distinct striping for crossing the roadway, strategically placed curbs, and additional signal phasing for safe crossings.
