Eugene, OR – According to the city officials, the street design standards, more formally known as the “Design Standards and Guidelines for Eugene Streets, Sidewalks, Bikeways and Accessways”, but an updated vision was drafted in 2020 with help from stakeholders across our community, including the Eugene Springfield Fire Department, the chamber of commerce, Lane Transit District, 4J Safe Routes to School and others.
The new Complete Street Design Standards draft draws inspiration from successful models nationwide.
The primary change from the existing standards is the street typology framework that considers nearby land use context in street design.
The Complete Street Design Standards identify preferred design elements for each street typology, ranging from Residential Connector Streets to Commercial Main Streets to Shared Streets.
The City of Eugene has already used the draft Complete Street Design Standards on projects funded through the street repair bond. Recent projects like Eighth Avenue downtown and Lincoln Street were designed using the new standards.
