Eugene, OR – Eugene Police Department are also reminding drivers about the lifesaving benefits of wearing a seat belt and proper child safety restraints as we all start this year.
Crashes are increasing in the United State to the highest toll in a decade and a half, despite the safety advances made in vehicle technology.
From 2020 to 2021, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration calculates the number of crashes in the United States has climbed 16 percent, to more than six million, or roughly 16,500 wrecks a day.
Of these 42,939 Americans died in car crashes in 2021. A large portion of those deaths involved intoxicated or unrestrained drivers or vehicles traveling well in excess of local speed limits.
Participating law enforcement agencies will be taking a no-excuses approach to seat belt law enforcement, writing citations day and night.
In Eugene, the presumptive fine for a seat belt violation is $200.
