OEM activates State Emergency Coordination Center in response to winter storm impacting Western Oregon
Oregon – The Oregon Department of Emergency Management (OEM) has activated the State Emergency Coordination Center (ECC) to Level 3 (Regional Response) due to an approaching winter storm that is expected to impact much of Western Oregon from the evening of Feb. 12 through Feb. 14. The National Weather Service has issued warnings of significant snow and freezing rain, which could result in hazardous travel conditions, road closures, power outages, and a need for temporary warming shelters.
In response to the forecasted storm, multiple emergency operations centers across the state have been activated. OEM is working closely with local, Tribal, and state partners to monitor the situation and coordinate response efforts as needed. The Level 3 activation allows OEM to stay informed, share information effectively, and support resource requests from local jurisdictions.
Residents are urged to take the following precautions during the storm:
1. **Stay informed**: Regularly check local weather forecasts and sign up for emergency alerts at ORalert.gov. Stay updated on real-time impacts and response efforts through the Hazard Situation Overview.
2. **Avoid travel if possible**: Snow and ice may make roads dangerous. If travel is necessary, carry an emergency kit, chains, and additional supplies.
3. **Prepare for winter driving**: Before leaving the house, check road conditions on TripCheck.com and ensure your vehicle has a shovel and an emergency car kit. For tips on preparing for winter driving, visit the OEM blog.
4. **Prepare for power outages**: Keep flashlights, extra batteries, and a backup heat source readily available. Never use generators or grills indoors due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
5. **Check on neighbors**: Be sure that vulnerable individuals have what they need to stay safe and warm during the storm.
6. **Know where to go for warmth**: Temporary warming shelters can be found at Oregon 211.
OEM is closely monitoring the storm and will continue to coordinate with partners to ensure the safety and well-being of Oregonians during the event.
