McKenzie Pass opens today with fresh pavement for all travelers
Bend, OR – According to the ODOT officials, the McKenzie Pass has remained closed as crews completed paving work on the narrow and winding section of road between the winter gate and the summit on the east side of the pass.
Funding from a Federal Lands Access Program grant has facilitated improvements along the highway, stretching from the junction with U.S. 20 in Sisters to the summit at Dee Wright Observatory.
These grants are particularly vital for low-traffic volume roads like McKenzie Pass.
With paving on the east side between the winter gate and the summit now finished, crews will shift their focus to the section below the snow gate.
This segment of the highway is wider, allowing crews to manage traffic with flaggers, alternating one lane at a time during paving operations. Motorists should anticipate delays as this work progresses. Following paving, crews will proceed with striping and signage, aiming for project completion by late August.
Given its popularity among cyclists, pedestrians, and other road users, drivers navigating this winding route are urged to exercise caution. Additionally, vehicles longer than 35 feet are prohibited due to the pass’s sharp and narrow curves.
Each year, McKenzie Pass is closed from November to mid-June due to weather conditions, logistical challenges, and cost considerations, making year-round travel impractical.
