Eugene Springfield Fire responds to second alarm apartment fire in Springfield, one transported, several cats rescued

Eugene, OR – Eugene Springfield Fire responded to a second alarm apartment fire in Springfield early Wednesday morning, February 12th. Firefighters were dispatched to the Northgate Manor Apartments in the 1800 block of L Street at 2:39 AM. Engine 4 and Tower 3 arrived approximately five minutes after dispatch to find heavy fire on the second floor of the two-story garden-style apartment building.
Crews immediately began searching for victims and attacking the well-involved fire, which had spread to another apartment and the attic. Due to the number of units needing to be searched and evacuated, a second alarm was called to bring in additional resources.
One occupant was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation and injuries sustained from jumping out of a second-floor window. Fortunately, all other occupants were safely evacuated. Firefighters searched areas they couldn’t access through traditional entry by using ladders to enter through windows.
While several cats perished in the fire, 15 others, including several kittens, were rescued and taken to Station 3, where Springfield Police Department (SPD) could pick them up.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Two apartment units sustained severe damage, but several others were saved thanks to the quick and aggressive response by the fire crews.
