Eugene Springfield Fire responded to gas leak that prompted evacuations in downtown Eugene, no injuries reported

Eugene, OR – According to the officials, firefighters were dispatched at 12:59 AM on October 25th following reports of a gas smell outside a cafe in the Market District, located at 550 Oak St.
Upon arrival, crews detected the odor of gas in the area and utilized specialized monitors that indicated low levels of gas present.
The first priority was to assess the Market District Commons apartments located above the cafe for any potential life safety threats. Gas was indeed detected in the apartment building, leading to a full evacuation of the premises.
As multiple crews worked to evacuate residents, they received support from responding officers of the Eugene Police Department. Meanwhile, truck crews forced entry into the cafe, where they found high levels of gas and promptly addressed the leak.
After successfully evacuating the building and mitigating the leak, crews proceeded to ventilate the area. Command staff coordinated with NW Natural to ensure the building was safe for reoccupancy.
]Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and residents were evacuated for approximately two hours. The Eugene Police Department was acknowledged for its support during the incident, and special thanks were given to the Gordon Hotel for providing a safe space for evacuees.
