South Carolina – A South Carolina woman was arrested and formally charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a vioIent crime after the death of her spouse, Denis, at the end of last month. South Carolina authorities say they responded to reports of gunfire at a local Health Center, a skilled care facility, and upon arrival they found the defendant, 82-year-old Hariet, next to her spouse, who had suffered a fatal chest wound. When life-saving efforts failed, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into the incident quickly developed. South Carolina authorities secured the room where the shooting had occurred and treated it as a crime scene. Deputies collected evidence, including a firearm found in the woman’s presence, and retrieved notes and financial documents from her purse and her home that appeared to suggest premeditation.

Investigators interviewed witnesses and family members and examined several handwritten notes for possible clues about a motive. During court proceedings, prosecutors read from one of the notes, which mentioned that the situation had become too much to handle, that life felt impossible without someone, and that the writer did not feel strong or capable enough to continue. South Carolina authorities considered the contents of these writings, along with other documents found, as indications that the act may have been premeditated.

Witnesses recounted how the scene unfolded. A neighbor had driven the woman to the facility and was showing her and her husband to their room when the neighbor left briefly to fetch a chair. While away, the neighbor heard a loud noise and hurried back, finding her standing with a revolver and the victim suffering a gunshot wound. A staff member who entered the room also observed the couple; the staff member reportedly saw her holding the gun. According to South Carolina authorities, before he died, the victim is said to have uttered, “She shot me.” When deputies took the elderly woman into custody, she asked for an attorney, and at one point she was reported to have said, “He was a good man,” describing the situation as sad.

Authorities moved promptly to present the case to a grand jury, and a judge found there was probable cause to advance the charges. The defendant is being held in the county jail without bond while awaiting her first court appearance. The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors build their case, relying on the evidence seized at the scene, witness statements, her own writings, and the timeline of events leading up to the fatal shooting.
