34-year-old man charged with assault after two people struck in head with sharpened sticks on Highway 99N

Eugene, OR – Eugene police arrested a 34-year-old man after two people were struck in the head with large sticks Monday evening on Highway 99N near Roosevelt Boulevard.

An officer was flagged down around 6:58 p.m. Sept. 21, where witnesses reported that a man carrying two large sticks had swung at one person and struck another man who was walking nearby.

Police said another person had also been injured by the suspect in the area.

One victim, 61, told police he was walking home when the suspect struck him. A second victim, 48, said he was asleep when he was struck. Both victims suffered injuries.

The officer located the suspect nearby carrying two sticks that were approximately 2 feet long and had sharpened ends.

Police identified the suspect as David Robert West, 34, of Eugene. West refused to drop the sticks and challenged the officer, who drew a Taser and gave him several warnings before West was taken into custody.

West was lodged at the Lane County Jail on two counts of second-degree assault.
