Ohio – An Ohio was arrested last week and charged with assauIt, endangering chiIdren, domestic vioIence, obstruction and disorderIy conduct after police say he attacked his girIfriend and their baby while lntoxicated. Ohio authorities took the defendant, 23-year-old A. Mappes, into custody at the scene and later at the hospital after officers say he became combative and refused to follow commands.

Police say the incident began when officers were called to the family’s residence in Ohio where the defendant and his girIfriend live. According to affidavits cited by local news, the woman reported that her child’s father struck her and left visible bruising and marks on her face and arm; officers observed bruising and two “bloody handprints” on the back of a sweatshirt that were documented in the probable cause statement. At the time of the alleged attack, the girIfriend was holding the couple’s six-month-old baby.

Investigators say the baby also showed injuries consistent with being struck. The probable cause affidavit described red marks and bruising on the baby’s face, shoulders and chest, and officers reported that the defendant struck the child in the head while the mother held the infant. The child was examined by medical staff, and those observations were included in police reports used to support the arrest.

After the initial response at the home, the defendant was transported to a hospital for evaluation. Police allege that while at the hospital he became disorderly — banging around in a room, yelling profanities and raciaI sIurs, and at one point attempting to assault or bite officers and hospital staff. Officers say he refused to obey commands, which led to obstruction and disorderly conduct counts in addition to the assault and child endangerment charges. All of those actions are described in the municipal court affidavits.

The investigation followed standard procedures for alleged domestic and child abuse. Officers documented visible injuries, took statements from the adult victim and hospital personnel, and included medical observations of the child in their probable cause statement. Those documents were used to establish the facts necessary to seek charges from the County prosecutor’s office and to place the defendant under arrest. Police also noted intoxication as a factor in the incident based on officers’ observations and statements in the affidavit.

According to the reports, the female victim told officers that the defnedant had attacked her and the baby during the incident. The victim’s account, together with the physical evidence and medical notes, formed the core of the probable cause affidavit that described the alleged sequence of events. The affidavit also notes the conduct hospital staff reported and the actions officers observed when they tried to restrain or control Mapes at the medical facility.

The defendant was arraigned in the Municipal Court. Court filings and local coverage say he pleaded not guilty and was released on his own recognizance under electronic monitoring while awaiting further proceedings. He is scheduled to appear again in municipal court on the date listed in court documents. The case remains under investigation by the local police department while prosecutors review the evidence and prepare for the next court steps.
