Virginia – A Virginia parent, 27-year-old L. HoIIoway, was sentenced to fifty years in prison, with twenty years suspended, for the brutaI kiIIing of his two-month-old chiId. The incident occurred in Dec. 2019, when the parent was responsible for caring for his baby. Family members reported hearing him yelling obscenities at the baby over a gming consoIe. Shortly after, the baby stopped crying and was found unresponsive. She was rushed to the hospital and placed on life support but succumbed to her injuries several days later.

The child suffered multiple severe injuries, including more than two dozen rib fractures in various stages of healing, bruising on her chest wall, a fractured clavicle, a skull fracture, bruises. around her eyes, and an extensive brain bIeed.

Doctors concluded these injuries were the result of abusive trauma rather than an accident. The severity of the injuries and the age of the victim were key factors in Holloway receiving a sentence that exceeded the standard state sentencing guidelines.

The defendant had a prior criminal history, which included previous convictions for child abuse and neglect, felony eluding police, DUI, carrying a concealed weapon, petit larceny, probation violations, and failure to appear in court. These prior offenses were taken into account during sentencing, demonstrating a pattern of disregard for the law and the safety of others.

During the investigation, the man admitted to police that he had become frustrated with the baby crying while he was playing his consoIe. He told responding officers that he shook and struck the infant, acknowledging the actions that led to her fatal injuries. Witness statements from family members confirmed the defendant’s aggressive behavior and his focus on playing ga mes rather than caring for the child.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Anderson and Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Lang. Investigators conducted interviews with family members, reviewed medical evidence, and examined Holloway’s criminal history to build the case. The evidence presented during the trial led to the parent’s conviction on charges of second-degree felony murder and child abuse.

The defendant’s sentencing serves as a stern reminder of the consequences of violent behavior toward children. The community and the victim’s surviving family members continue to grieve while also hoping that the prosecution and sentencing may provide a measure of justice. Officials continue to urge anyone who suspects child abuse to report it immediately, as early intervention can save lives and prevent devastating outcomes.
