Eugene opens new downtown riverfront park plaza designed as vibrant community gathering space
Eugene, OR – Eugene celebrated the official opening of the new Downtown Riverfront Park Plaza on August 7, marking a significant addition to the city’s riverfront park system. The one-acre plaza blends natural and urban elements to create an inviting space for people of all ages.
The plaza features a tree grove, interactive public art installations, a splash pad with a water feature, an adventure playground, and plenty of seating areas offering scenic views of the Willamette River. Future redevelopment plans include surrounding the plaza with multifamily housing and a restaurant, establishing it as a true urban gathering spot.
A grand opening celebration is planned for September 12–14, featuring live music and food trucks for community members to enjoy.
Funding for the plaza came from the Oregon Legislature, Parks System Development Charges, and the City’s Riverfront Urban Renewal Agency, with maintenance supported by the 2023 Parks and Recreation Levy.
This project advances the city’s vision to transform the former EWEB utility site into a vibrant public park that reconnects downtown Eugene to the river.
The new plaza aligns with Eugene’s strategic goal of fostering a Culture of Belonging, creating a welcoming space that honors the community’s history, environment, and spirit.
