Drivers clocked going nearly 90 MPH on Beltline as summer traffic enforcement ramps up in Eugene

Eugene, OR – As summer approaches and students prepare for the end of the school year, traffic enforcement officers are urging drivers to follow posted speed limits after citing two individuals for excessive speeding on the Beltline.

On Thursday, Eugene traffic officers issued citations to two drivers for traveling over 80 miles per hour in a 55 MPH zone. One of the drivers was reportedly going nearly 90 MPH. In a lighthearted explanation, one driver told officers they may have mistaken the speed on their dashboard for the outside temperature reading.

Despite the unusual excuse, police stressed that excessive speed is no joke. High speeds can reduce reaction times and increase the severity of collisions, posing risks to everyone on the road.

The Eugene Police Department is using the incident as a reminder for the public to remain cautious, especially with increased travel expected during the summer season. Law enforcement agencies across Oregon are expected to step up traffic patrols in the coming weeks to monitor for unsafe driving behaviors, including speeding, distracted driving, and impaired operation.

The Beltline is a heavily used route in Eugene and has been a frequent focus for traffic safety enforcement. Officers will continue to monitor the area and other major roadways to ensure compliance with traffic laws.

No crashes or injuries were reported in connection with the recent citations. However, police warn that continued violations could result in higher fines, license consequences, or legal action in the case of reckless driving.

Drivers are encouraged to remain attentive, drive at safe speeds, and do their part to keep local roads safe during the busy summer travel season.
