Winter weather causes multi-vehicle crashes and full closure of westbound I-84

Oregon – A crash on Thursday morning led to a full closure of westbound I-84 between Hood River (milepost 64) and four miles west of Multnomah Falls (milepost 27).
Winter weather, including blowing snow and high winds, created whiteout conditions, which contributed to a series of crashes involving 20 to 30 vehicles across multiple locations, blocking the westbound lanes between mileposts 28-29.
Road conditions in the affected areas are slick but passable, and the crashes were caused by a combination of high winds and drivers traveling too fast for the conditions.
At the time of the release, there was no estimated time of reopening, as crews continue to clear the area.
Elsewhere on the I-84 corridor:
– I-84 is closed in both directions between La Grande (Exit 265) and Baker City (Exit 302).
– I-84 westbound is closed to trucks between Ontario (Exit 374) and Baker City (Exit 302).
These closures are due to blowing and drifting snow, with visibility less than 500 feet.
