Suspect killed in officer-involved shooting near Moon Mountain in Eugene
Eugene, OR – The Eugene Police Department confirmed an officer-involved shooting on November 26 in the Moon Mountain and Glenwood Boulevard area while attempting to apprehend a fugitive from Washington state. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced deceased at the scene. No officers were injured during the incident, and authorities assured the public there is no ongoing threat to the community.
The encounter occurred at approximately 3:21 p.m., prompting an immediate response from the Lane County Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team (IDFIT). Under Oregon law, IDFIT assumes the primary investigative role in incidents involving the use of deadly force to ensure independence from the involved agency.
The investigation follows guidelines established under Oregon Senate Bill 111, passed in 2007. This legislation provides a framework for a consistent response to deadly force incidents, promoting fairness for law enforcement officers and maintaining public trust in the justice system. Lane County and the City of Eugene adopted these guidelines in 2008.
Since then, all officer-involved deadly force incidents involving Eugene Police Department personnel have been investigated by representatives from independent law enforcement agencies under IDFIT’s oversight. Findings from these investigations are referred to the Lane County District Attorney’s Office for review to determine if any criminal actions occurred during the incident.
The Eugene Police Department has deferred media inquiries to the Lane County District Attorney’s Office, emphasizing its commitment to transparency and adherence to the investigative process. Further updates are expected once IDFIT concludes its investigation and the District Attorney reviews the findings.
