Eugene, OR – According to the state officials, this regional accolade, awarded in the small safety category, qualifies the project for consideration among 12 national honors to be bestowed by AASHTO this fall.

The announcement was made during AASHTO’s western regional association meeting in Omaha. AASHTO Executive Director Jim Tymon, in a letter to ODOT Director Kris Strickler, highlighted the participation of 39 state departments of transportation in this year’s competition.

Previously, the intersection of OR 213 and Toliver Road was regulated by stop signs and had a notably high crash rate. A 2018 road safety audit evaluated the safety concerns and travel patterns at this intersection, identifying potential solutions.

Following collaboration with local agencies and engineers, the audit concluded that a roundabout would offer the greatest safety benefits.

The roundabout has significantly improved safety by reducing sharp turns and accommodating large vehicles such as trucks, buses, and agricultural equipment. Additionally, new lighting was installed to further enhance visibility and safety.

The recognition from AASHTO underscores the effectiveness of the project in improving both safety and traffic flow in the region.
