Eugene police to keep a closer watch on shoplifters this holiday season

The Eugene Police Dept. say the holiday season usually comes with a spike in shoplifting.
That’s why officers plan to keep closer watch this year, as businesses are already struggling during the pandemic.
Officers will work alongside EPD’s Community Engagement Team in addition to store security.
During the holidays in the past, teams of shoplifters from outside the local area coordinated efforts.
EPD says businesses need to be proactive.
“We always talk about increasing employee presence when possible, maybe in the higher dollar departments like electronics or areas like that. Sometimes the products are secure there with security devices or even in a locked cabinet,” said Jeff Blondé, Community Engagement Program Editor with EPD.
While spikes around the holidays are expected, Blondé says right now there isn’t any sign that shoplifting has increased throughout the pandemic.
“I’m not aware of it to suggest that. I have not seen any trends locally or nationally to suggest that is a motivator or driver, if you will,” said Blondé.
Eugene Police suggest if you’re planning to shop at multiple stores this holiday, watch your merchandise and belongings to prevent theft.
Also, keep up-to-date with your packages as they arrive at your door – leave no opportunity for porch pirates.
